When it comes to minimalist interiors, it's no surprise that simplicity is key. Achieving that perfect uncluttered look, balanced with eye-catching details and clean lines, it's an art form in and of itself. So introducing greenery into the space can sometimes be a challenge.

Choosing the right plant to complement your décor is no easy feat. Achieving the perfect uncluttered look with great eye-catching details is an art form in and of itself.

Design with GREEN

"The dracaena marginate, or 'dragon tree,' is perfect for a minimalist room," Alana Langan - co-founder of IVY MUSE tells Homes to Love.

For me, I love tree, I love nature, but when I buy any tree to put in my house, most plants end up dying very quickly due to lack of care and maintenance. As a minimalist, I prefer something simple, clean, and beautiful (of course!). I don't want to add an extra step to their daily routine anyway – the whole reason behind minimal interiors.

Rules are meant to be broken

Thankfully, the “rules are meant to be broken” zeitgeist is the latest top interior design trend as the most important home design rule is to showcase the aesthetics that you love. Since plants can improve the quality of life in so many ways, adding them to any type of interior design makes perfect sense. And it shouldn’t be an afterthought.

Find the balance

“Be original and show off your style.”

Let the shapes of the room dictate the shapes of the plants or flowers. For a cohesive look, spaces with long, rectangular-shaped furniture go well with orchids. Maintain a sleek look by making sure all plants or flowers in a room look great as a bunch before spreading them throughout. Vary the size of the same type of plant to for some depth while keeping it minimal. (Credit: Now Design)

Statement pieces

Instead of looking for bulky furniture to fill up a space, try a large potted plant like the dracaena or the fiddle fig tree. These growing plants are great indoors and with time, they naturally become part of the house. Find a corner — next to the sofa, at the end of the corridor or at the foyer; as long as they have a good amount of sunlight. (Credit: Pinterest)

Terrarium territory

Glass terrariums allow you to spotlight the plants without disrupting the flow of the space with bulk pots. These small plants thrive with little effort, adding a dainty touch to any corner you want. If you don’t want to crowd those flat surfaces, choose to hang them. (Credit: Pinterest)

Vertical wall art

The “green wall” vertical garden can seamlessly fit with the rest of the house as a subtle piece of living art. Besides improving the air quality (depending on what kind of plants you choose), it is a beautiful ensemble that doesn’t invade the space. If you’d like something more functional, try growing a vertical green wall with your favourite herbs. (Credit: Pinterest)

Plant shelving

There’s one thing about plants – they look particularly lovely when placed on a shelf. Styling with houseplants is really easy because they turn flat surfaces into beautiful fresh corners. Whether it is a crawling type or a stately sit-in-a-pot kind, shelving plants lies entirely on your personal creativity. (Credit: Jonas Poulsen)

Fresh only

When it comes to decorating your home with greenery, only use fresh living plants. Say no to synthetic ones that would turn your beautiful home from tasteful to tacky. Fresh plants give an extra breath of fresh air every minimalist home needs. (Credit: Pinterest)
